There are 48 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. It is the hottest continent and home of the world's largest desert, the Sahara, occupying the 25% of the total area of Africa. Nigeria is one of the fastest-growing countries in the world, and by the year 2050, will overtake the United States as the world's third most populous nation. As a whole, Africa is the second largest and second most populous continent.
Most countries in sub-Saharan Africa achieved independence between the 1960s and 1980s, so their economies and infrastructure are still developing. This is is proving most difficult for countries that are landlocked due to the extra hurdles in transportation and right of way they must overcome to get their goods to and from port.
